Special Education and Regional Center Blog
Helping Parents Navigate the Special Education, the Regional Center, and IHSS program.
Attention all Regional Center parents and consumers are you receiving all available services from the Regional Center? First, it is your right to receive all needed services that are identified in your IPP. Second, Self Determination is coming and it is important to maximize your budget. The State Council on Developmental Disabilities Los Angeles Office put together a trifold pamphlet to assist consumers. See https://scdd.ca.gov/. I have copied and pasted from their 3 to 18 pamphlet here:
It is important to remember that, in order to get a certain type of service, it must be identified as a need in your child’s IPP.
Also, regional centers cannot pay for services that another agency is required to pay for. In addition, some types of services have very strict requirements in the Lanterman Act that must be met for regional center funding. For children there will be a strong expectation that the school district will have primary responsibility for services. This is not an exhaustive list. If your child needs a particular service, the regional center is obligated to help you find it from a generic resource or develop and pay for it.
Note: Regional centers are prohibited from funding non -medical therapies unless the therapy is the primary way of ameliorating your child’s disability. They also may not fund social/recreational or camping services for the time being. Please refer to the Lanterman Act, Section 4512(b). (California Welfare and Institutions Code)
